One of the most remarkable things about the resignation of Bob Quick is how it suddenly made Jacqui Smith look good. Suddenly the semantics of her situation were changed – the Home Secretary was in a position to be ‘disappointed’ by Mr Quick’s failure to conceal secret documents from the probing lenses of photographers. She looked like a boss, not an employee on the way out.
Does this take the heat off the Home Secretary? It has certainly diverted attention from her other half’s porn purchases. Media focus can be skittish and over-caffeinated, and the momentum against her and MPs expenses seems to have dissipated in the face of this new terrorist affair. Ms Smith has apparently even gone on the front foot in the news cycle, reportedly becoming ‘irritated‘ about how Boris Johnson handled the affair.
