Ben Affleck must be spinning in his grave. It has been reported that Kate and Gerry McCanns are in talks for a movie about the sad plight of their lost daughter, Madeleine. Affleck’s film, Gone Baby Gone, was pulled from release in the UK last year due to similarities with the Maddie case, so one wonders whether he will choose to release it later, in competition with any potential ‘official’ account? Seeing as any profits are surely headed for a search fund, such a move would seem mean spirited at best. Gone Baby Gone is currently earmarked for an April release.
From the McCanns’ perspective, given the production schedule of a big screen story, one can’t help but wonder what would happen should Madeleine turn up halfway through filming. Perhaps the event could be incorporated into the narrative, facilitating a bizarre, Charlie Kaufman-style outcome. (See Adaptation, Being John Malkovich.)
