In 2008, the News Hour prize for chutzpah goes to ‘Serbian Rod’ Blagojevich, the embattled governor of Illinois. Without a doubt, the man with the mop-top has shown brass neck amid allegations that he tried to sell Barack Obama’s vacant senate seat, but never moreso than yesterday – when Blagojevich blithely named Obama’s replacement, Roland Burris, despite being under threat of impeachment. Now that’s determination – and the beauty of it is that, if anyone complains, Blagojevich could say that they just don’t like black people.* For Mr Burris’s sake, you hope that his employer isn’t out on his ear in ’09.
